Our Mission

Westport is a coastal town with a story that reaches from the American Revolution to the arts, theater, and the shores of Long Island Sound.
In 1777, British troops landed at what is now Compo Beach on their way to raid Danbury. Local militia confronted them as they returned. Today, the Minute Man statue recalls that chapter of Westport's history.[westporthistory.org][westportct.gov]
A century later, Westport became a gathering place for artists, illustrators, writers, and performers. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald spent part of 1920 here, and the town's connection to The Great Gatsby remains part of its literary lore. Westport later became home to Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, while creative talent continued to emerge from its schools and community.[westporthistory.org][cenr.sc.edu]
That spirit is still easy to find. Stroll through downtown beside the Saugatuck River, explore its shops and restaurants, or head to Compo Beach for a view across Long Island Sound. Westport's history, culture, and coastline are all close enough to enjoy in a single day — and rich enough to keep discovering.[westportct.gov]
